Recently, Commissioner John Doak released a letter encouraging OCIA membership. We are very appreciative of this message from the Oklahoma Insurance Department and encourage you to read the letter here.

 

February 25, 2015 | March 2015 OCIA Meeting Announced

The Oklahoma Captive Insurance Association will have a meeting at 10:30AM March 23, 2015 at the offices of Midlands located at:

3817 Northwest Expressway
Suite 1000
Oklahoma City, OK 73112

 

The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the current by laws and changes necessary to make the Association more efficient and attractive to industry members. We will also discuss the annual plans and goals of the Association and establish committees necessary to perpetuate the Association. 

Oklahoma has become a very attractive captive domicile and it is incumbent upon the industry to provide the best atmosphere as possible to support captives and their owners.  Please RSVP to Robin Green with Midlands at [email protected].  

  

February 25, 2015 | Commissioner Doak Encourages OCIA Membership

In a letter addressed and currently being mailed to members within the captive industry, Commissioner John Doak endorsed the OCIA. OID Commissioner Doak stated, “It is my hope that you will consider participating in the OCIA. I am committed to providing a responsive, strong and predictable regulatory environment for captive insurance in the Sooner State.”

 

February 15, 2015 | Licensed Captives Top 50

James Mills, Director of the Captive Division of the Oklahoma Insurance Department, announced that as of February 15, 2015, Oklahoma has licensed over 50 captives. 

 

February 3, 2015 | OID Captive Division at World Captive Forum

On February 2, 2015 the Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Captive Division, led by Director James Mills and Counsel Gordon Amini, attended the World Captive Forum meeting in Boca Raton, Florida. The Department leveraged an eye-catching booth and message of "Oklahoma Is Open for Business," which well resonated with attendees.

 

February 2, 2015 | 2015 Oklahoma Captive Legislation

Mr. Gordon Amini, attorney for the Oklahoma Insurance Department's Captive Division, and Mr. Owen Laughlin, Former State Senator and Sponsor of the 2013 rewrite of the Captive Statute, announced proposed changes to the Oklahoma Captive law. Below is a list of highlights of what is being introduced in the Oklahoma House and Senate:

  • Allow a Protected Cell to be a Separate Legal Entity
  • Clarify Authority to Write "First Dollar" Workers Compensation and Occupational Injury
  • Apply Insurance Code Investment Provisions to Sponsored Captives
  • Expand the "Persons" who may "Sponsor" a Protected Cell Captive
  • Clarify Authority to Assume Reinsurance
  • Special Provisions for Protected Cell Insolvency

 

February 1, 2015 | Second Oklahoma Captive Conference Scheduled for Fall 2015

The OCIA and the Oklahoma Insurance Department are planning a second annual captive conference for fall of 2015. “With the outstanding growth in the number of our captive insurers, we should expect an expanded and enhanced agenda for the upcoming conference” said Charlie Caldwell, one of the founding members of OCIA. Be sure to watch for forthcoming information on what will be a significant event for the Oklahoma captive marketplace.

 

May 2, 2014 | OID Conducts Inaugural Oklahoma Captive Conference

On April 30, 2014 the Oklahoma Insurance Department conducted the first ever Oklahoma Captive Conference in Oklahoma City. The Commissioner, John Doak, pronounced the event a great success with 75 captive owners, managers and service providers in attendance.

 

March 20, 2014 | Commissioner Doak Endorses OCIA

In a letter addressed to the captive industry, Commissioner John Doak endorsed the OCIA. Commissioner Doak stated, “I am encouraged by the recently formed Oklahoma Captive Insurance Association (OCIA). Every state that boasts a robust captive industry also has an active private sector captive insurance association which works hand-in-hand with the Insurance Department. It is my hope that you will consider actively participating in the OCIA.”

March 15, 2014 | Oklahoma Captive Division Exhibits at CICA International Conference

The Oklahoma Insurance Department will present at a conference concerning the changes to the Oklahoma Captive Industry. The conference will be held at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr, Oklahoma City, OK 73105 and is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (attendee registration begins at 8 a.m.) See the OID website for registration information.

 

March 15, 2014 | Oklahoma Captive Division Exhibits at CICA International Conference

The Oklahoma Insurance Department's Captive Division sent a four-person team, led by Mr. James Mills to promote Oklahoma as the new domicile of choice for captive insurance companies. 

 

January 27, 2014 | First Oklahoma Captives Conference Scheduled for April 29, 2014

The Oklahoma Insurance Department will present at the conference concerning the changes to the Oklahoma Captive Industry subsequent to the new Oklahoma Statute which went into effect November 1, 2013. The Commissioner has asked OCIA to give a presentation on the Association’s purposes and plans.  

The captive program will be held in conjunction with the Oklahoma Domestic Insurance Companies Conference on April 29th at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive,Oklahoma City, OK 73105.

 

January 1, 2014 | Designation of Mr. James Mills as Captive Division Leader

Insurance Commissioner, John Doak, names Mr. James Mills J.D., MBA,, to head the Department's New Captive Insurance Division. With the designation, another important step forward is taken in the ability to promote Oklahoma as a business-friendly, cost-effective and hospitable domicile for captives.

 

July 1, 2013 | Oklahoma Supreme Court Strikes Down Comprehensive Tort Reform

In two June rulings, the Oklahoma Supreme Court struck down Oklahoma’s 2009 Tort Reform Legislation. The Court declared a tort reform bill violated the Oklahoma Constitution's requirement that legislation cover only a single subject. The Legislature is expected to soon reconvene in a special session to pass the same law again. Senate leadership has indicated that about two dozen bills may be filed for that effort.

 

June 25, 2013 | Business Conference "Captive 101" Postponed

The first annual Business Conference "Captive 101," jointly sponsored by the Oklahoma Insurance Department, The University of Central Oklahoma and OCIA, and originally scheduled for August 8th, has been postponed at the request of the Commissioner. An announcement as to the rescheduled event will be forthcoming.
